The day of formation of Karachay-Cherkessia is celebrated by residents of the republic on September 7. By the decree of the acting head of Karachay-Cherkessia, Rashid Temrezov, this day was declared a non-working day. In addition, the Day of the city of Cherkessk will be celebrated on September 7.
The Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region, which was part of the Stavropol Territory, in 1992 was transformed into an independent subject of the Russian Federation. The Day of the Republic is combined with the Day of Unity of the Peoples of the KCR, which was previously celebrated on July 3. The capital of the republic - Cherkessk - was founded in the fall of 1825.
The region received its present name in December 1992. Earlier, on January 12, 1922, the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region was formed. In 1991 it was transformed into the Karachay-Cherkess Soviet Socialist Republic within the RSFSR.
