Day of revival of the Karachai people - May 3, is celebrated annually and is a public holiday in Karachay-Cherkessia. Dedicated to the return of the Karachai people after 14 years of deportation from Central Asia to their homeland. Established by decree of the head of the republic of the KCR in 1997.
The Karachai people were the first repressed people of the North Caucasus. In exile, out of 70 thousand deported Karachais, more than 43 thousand people died, of which 22 thousand were children. Later, Chechens, Ingush and Balkars were also evicted from their original places of residence. The repressed peoples received the right to return to their native land on January 9, 1957.
Revival is a memorable date. It is a joyous day filled with sorrowful memories of events that should never happen again.
